Common man & Old art forms + non Commercial movies
Old art forms do exist. The elite group( who identifies and promotes) is very few in number these days. The main factor for this is the dettachement of the common man from these art forms
Take the case of Non-commercial cinema. The number of people watching it is very few. Those films will be displayed on Film festivals and people who love these kind of cinema watch them with such enthusiam during such events. Film festivals conducted all over the country is very well attended. But No one has the courage to distrubute these films and display it in cinpelexes and multiplexes because there is common notion that there is no commercial value for these movies. people will not watch it that is the justification distribution companies give.
And that is the truth which i could observe when i went to watch a movie back home. I was watching "Thirakadha" made by renjith. There was a crowd to watch the movie cause it was the first day. But from their response from the begining it was eveident that they were not enjoying the movie. And there was a big "BOO", thumbs downto the movie and it was declared a flop doing very low collection.
I would say it was a courageous effort from the director and the crew to take such a subject and make a movie out of it. Even if it wasnt commercial masala story line it did had stuff to get the investment back.
And then there was another tamil movie starring "Vijay". It was a normal masala movie astounding sets, above the real life stunt scenes, quick fast songs. And the crowd mainly youth was on their feet from the begining cheering and whistling all time. I found nothing extraordinary in the movie. It was full entertianment and that is the what the crowd wanted.
As one film star rightly quoted, "It is difficult to say the appreciation level of the movie audience were degraded due to these masala movies or the movies were made to satisfy such movie audiences. Whatever the factors are, it is not doing good to movies, let that be non-commercial or commercial.
As other art forms are concerned, such as kathakali and other classical dance forms. I didnt had the oppurtunity or the patience to understand how actually to enjoy these performances. I believe the same is the case with people of my age. I cannot relate to something which i cannot follow or understand.
I believe there should be a general awareness of all art forms from the school level itself. A short workshop will be enough to generate great interest in kids which will induce some interest in them to explore more about the art forms. That would encourage them to indulge in further pursuit to know the art form in much better perspective or as a career option.
Ancient art forms are here to stay as they promote real culture and true life values and stories.
But revival of them back to there prime times need a total shift in the attitude of the common masses.....
